Fly Away Home illustrates a homeless father and son who live in an airport. The young boy is sometimes sad and upset that they does not have a permanent residence but is also very grateful for what he does have. The story shows the hardships of the young boy and his father and the young boys dream to one day go home like the bird does. This was one of my favorite books that I have read this semester. The story is sad but amazing. I used this book in my text set about home and community because think that this book is a great book to start off with because it will either confirm or contradict with the student’s idea of what a home is. My guess would be it would contradict their prior beliefs to what a home is in which case we would do different types of activities, readings, and discussions about what types of homes and communities exist. This would definitely be a book that a lot of kids would have questions about but that is a great thing in the classroom. I think this book is a necessity in the classroom library and my own personal collection as well.
